Kennedy Sutherland LLP was founded by Patrick J. Kennedy Jr. in 1983 to provide comprehensive counsel to public and private companies.

From the beginning our firm has represented banks. An entrepreneur at heart, Pat has always believed in the value that community banks and local businesses bring to their towns and regions. His personal experience in banking and other entrepreneurial pursuits set the tone early on for the firm to operate from the perspective of business owner as well as lawyer, which has been a great asset to serving clients. 

After becoming a partner in 2010 William “Dub” Sutherland VI joined Pat in managing and growing the firm, with an increased focus on growing a local client base in the greater San Antonio area. They expanded the practice into areas including venture capital, start ups, real estate and real estate finance law.

In 2020, Patrick Kennedy III joined the firm as a partner and opened the firm's first out-of-state office in Los Angeles. Patrick III leads the firm's tax practice and has expertise in a variety of business and nonprofit tax matters and specialized experience in tax credit and community development finance transactions. Patrick III advises clients across the country on tax, business, and real estate issues.

Today, the firm includes eight attorneys spread across three offices in San Antonio, Austin, and Los Angeles, and serves clients in over 20 states, providing state-of-the-art advice to help our client grow, overcome challenges, and capitalize on opportunities.
